HOW TO MAKE AN UPCYCLED DENIM APRON

A while ago on a Etsy shop I really like (Pontiac Dry Goods), I ordered a stylish vintage apron made from selvedge denim. I ordered an epic vintage apron made from selvedge denim, I adore wearing that apron cooking up some new DIY for you guys, as if just wearing it makes me feel more creative. Every rip, tear and stain in the fabric acts as a mysterious clue pointing to a memorable story. That apron is the inspiration starter point for this tutorial. (even made a post about it check it out)

After a couple of trials this new apron came to life featuring upcycled denim, the original pockets from your jeans now serve as handy places to tuck away items as you cook. The result is next level! And it’s always a great sign when I sample a new gift idea and the preorders start rolling in fast. Let’s just say that some lucky people will receive unique upcycled denim aprons this festive season – courtesy of their thoughtful friends’ effort, creativity and environmental sensibility.

Like always here the bag downloadable pattern and the step by step instructions to make your very own upcycled denim bag. What tales will your vintage denim apron tell?

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS :

This pattern placement is an exemple and will vary depending on the size of jeans you are working with.

Cut the fabric

I love cutting using an Exacto. This technique is faster than scissors as I don’t have to trace the pattern. The blade need to be change quite often but this technique works really well with thick fabrics. I would not recommend it with lighter and delicate fabrics.

The pattern has 7 pieces total( A à G)

  • Cut A X 1, B X 1, C X 1, D X 1, E X 2, F X 2, G X 2

  • For optimal result I suggest a denim 100% cotton or with a very small amount of lycra.

SEWING STEPS

STEP 1 :

  • Sew piece A with B (become AB)

  • Sew AB with C (become ABC)

  • Sew ABC with D (become ABCD)

  • Press the seam allowance open, top stitch the seams if you feel like it.

  • You can finish the seam allowance cutting with pinking shears sewing scissors or use a serger if you have one.

STEP 2 : SEW THE BOTTOM PART OF THE APRON

  • Sew F with G (become FG), do it twice

  • Sew both FG pieces together (becomeFGGF)

  • Press the seam allowance open, top stitch the seams if you feel like it.

  • You can finish the seam allowance cutting with pinking shears sewing scissors or use a serger if you have one.

Sew ABCD and FGGF together taking care of placing the knotches on piEce D on top of the seams on FG.

STEP 3 : SEW THE SIDES

Sew piece E on both sides of the apron.

  • Press the seam allowance open, top stitch the seams if you feel like it.
    • You can finish the seam allowance cutting with pinking shears sewing scissors or use a serger if you have one.

STEP 4 : SEW THE TOP, SIDES AND BOTTOM HEMS.

    • Double fold and press at 1/2” or 1.2 cm the top, side and bottom hem before sewing. Use pins if you prefer.

    • Save the armhole hem for later as the straps need to be fix first.

STEP 5: SEW THE STRAPS ON

    • Double fold and press the armhole hem inserting the straps on both ends.

    • Sew the hem and the straps taking care of doing a stitch in bias on both ends to make sure both straps are properly fix. Coudre l’ourlet et les ganses en prenant soin de faire une couture en biais aux extrémités afin de bien fixer les ganses.

STEP 6 : FIX THE POCKETS
